High School Spanish 2 (or adult refresher Spanish)

This Interactive group Zoom class meets individually OR with other students from around Alaska and beyond!

In the second year of high school Spanish there is a lot to review so that we can set up a strong foundation. We will review what we learned in first year Spanish, and then begin adding new vocabulary and grammar so we can practice it with other students in class.  In the second semester (in Spring) we will begin to expand our conversations with more complex language, so that by the end of the year we have much of the basic language needed to casually converse with native speakers while traveling in a Spanish-speaking country.  We will have plenty of practice using the language to help us build the confidence needed to actually do that.

Course description:

Students develop skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Student will learn to understand and produce simple expressions and are introduced to the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. The goal is to develop fluency in real-life situations within the novice mid to intermediate low range as indicated by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Emphasis is on vocabulary development and essential grammar within a context. Students will be able to speak about themes of self, community, travel, activities, nature, schedules, animals, rules, customs, and more. Students will learn and practice basic conversation in present, past, conditional, imperfect, imperative, present progressive, and past perfect tenses.

NOTE: 7th-8th grade students may register with instructor permission.

Meets 2x per week, T/Th mornings.

Live group, also available as private or partner classes for siblings or friends

High School Spanish 3 or Spanish 4

Spanish 3 and 4 are for dedicated Spanish learners who want to not only speak Spanish, but read, write and learn more complex grammatical structures. These classes lean into literature, advanced conversation, and Spanish discussions.

Students continue their development of communication skills. Increased emphasis is placed on responding to written and verbal input, including learning more about Spanish-speaking cultures through reading selections and conversation.  In this course students learn more complex grammar and continue to expand upon vocabulary acquisition in order to satisfy some survival needs and courtesy requirements. The main goal of this course is for students to progress towards an intermediate low level of proficiency as indicated by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Meets 2x per week
